Reign of Content

Rain cascades from the grey mists above to saturate vegetation and the aquifers beneath it. Drops tinkle against windows and tin to craft a natural melody for the tree frog’s song. The first day of rain sets the outdoor world in gem-like sheen.

We dust-beings observe from shelter. New scenery delights the eye–until the novelty tarnishes. A month’s thirst fades from our mind after one wet day too many. Well before a storm threatens to flood our property, we bewail the missing sun. Our complaints against its harsh rays slip out from memory as we begrudge the clouds’ unwelcome shade. We plead for showers, then wish them to end. How our fickle hearts betray us!

Discontent plagues the human race, for we do not align our hearts with the Wellspring of Joy. Happiness eludes those who stare from cave-like holes at the circumstances, impaling their hope on “whether” forecasts.

Joy assures us of life breathed into our dry carcasses, regardless of heat or storms. Christ calms the storms within so we can dance with Him in rain or shine without melting.

I praise You, Lord, Maker of all things from grey to gold. You hold my hand and quiet my thundering heart. In You, my Savior, I can rest with content. You are all I need, and my true thirst is quenched by Your Spirit’s spring of life within me. Thank You, Lord Jesus. May all Your works drum and shine together as a melody of praise to which Your children sing. Amen.
